Group News

We have been introduced to a site named Car Free Walks - a resource for people who love walking but want to reduce their impact on the environment.  They offer easy-to-use guides for walks throughout the UK that are accessible via public transport, with all walks submitted and reviewed by users.  They are completely free of charge and have launched the project as a “labour of love” for something they hold very close to their hearts.

Every year Stratford Ramblers’ group members are invited to nominate a best kept footpath in the Stratford area. Considering that annually the group cover over 1200 miles on their thrice weekly walks, there are plenty of footpaths to consider. Nominations are reviewed by the committee who then judge the best kept footpath. This year’s winners are Mrs Carol Kibblewhite and family of Bunkers Hill Farm and Swim School near Welford on Avon. This was for a very well maintained path with a generous 3 metre width of close mown grass around their property. A presentation was made by Harry Rowe, Footpath Officer to Carol on Saturday 12th November at Bearley Village Hall prior to the AGM.

After a “bring and share” lunch, the AGM was an opportunity to review the previous year’s activities which included the Big Pathwatch survey of local footpaths checking on accessibility, signage and path maintenance (a Nationwide organised Ramblers’ initiative), the well-supported Shakespeare Walking week in April, six coach walks over the summer months and walking holidays to Majorca and the Isle of Wight. Appreciation was expressed to all who co-ordinate the regular walks programme and our newsletter editor Kes Lodge.

Plans for next year were also outlined. This included walking holidays in Greece and the Peak District, coach walks commencing again in April, and a continuation of Monday evening strolls in the summer months, as well as weekly walks on Sundays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The existing committee was re-elected for another year.

Guidance for Walk Leaders

Elected at the Group AGM 31st October 2016

This summer we are planning to walk The Donnington Way. This 65-mile circular route links the Donnington Brewery with all 15 of its pubs around the Cotswolds starting from Stow on the Wold. From April onwards the walks will all be linear, which means that the parking place shown in the programme is at the end of the walk. We meet there at 9.30 and then combine cars to drive back to the start. No need to book, and you can pick and choose which walks you do.

Further details from Susan Bruce on 07780 826698 or susanjbruce@msn.com or from the leader shown for each section in the walks programme.
