August Bank Holiday and I look outside at the novelty of the rain. I wonder how you all have managed to deal with the heatwaves this summer. Traditionally June, July and August have been months when I have led longer, more adventurous walks to take advantage of the warmer days and extended daylight hours.

However when faced with leading a 11.5 miles walk to Henley on a 30°+ day, I did decide in future to make these spring or autumn walks! The intrepid Wednesday walkers completed this walk with a welcome Henley ice cream at the end but at times I found it pretty gruelling.

Despite the temperature, with leaders making some adaptations, we have maintained our walks programme. Particular successes have been the evening walks, including a fish and chip supper, town trail quiz and a picnic on the terrace of a deserted Upton House. The Heart of England Way continues apace and will be completed in early October.

The last three months of the year offer a variety of walking opportunities including extra ‘Twixmas’ walks for anyone fancying a leg stretch after too many mince pies. Also there is our AGM on 28th November, which is a bring and share lunch followed by the AGM. Please do come if you can, and give your views on how the group can be improved, including our summer walking experience.

Thanks must go to all those who help in any way - some are the unsung heroes who step in to lead walks when the original leader is unable, others are people who carry out first aid when someone has a fall, andthen there are those who offer lifts to members who have no transport. Yet more turn up with cakes or offer hospitality to weary walkers. All these have happened in the last quarter, and it makes me feel very privileged to be the Chair of such a lovely, considerate group.
